Preserving has become particularly fashionable but if you're more Mr Bean than Mary Berry in the kitchen, there are lots of handy gadgets out there to make your preserving adventures easier. One of them is the Weck canner, an electric powered water bath with a number of functions designed to ease the preserving process.

Weck is a well-known German brand and has been highly regarded in the preserving world for over a century. The Weck preserving system features glass jars and lids with a rubber ring and two metal clamp seals. When filled, the closed jars go into the canner and are heated in hot water and are then allowed to cool. The change in air pressure creates a vacuum effect inside the jar to maintain your jams, chutneys and other preserves in perfect condition. What's unique about the Weck system is that it allows you to test the integrity of the seal you create.

The Weck preserving water bath, like other Weck products, displays high quality German design and engineering for perfect preserving, sterilising, juicing and for warming. The bath can hold up to 29 litres of water or other liquid and has a handy tap on the front so that juice can be cleanly and easily extracted. An indicator light on the front of the machine means you can see when the contents have reached temperature, while an ultra-precise thermostat helps to create the ideal temperature for different preserves and jams. The machine also has an overheating protection system for your safety and convenience.

The Weck preserving water bath comes with a two layer enamel coating in white and black for durability and easy cleaning, featuring the famous Weck red strawberry logo on the front. The canner measures 35cm x 40cm x 35cm and has a handle on each side for easy movement. Maximum power consumption is 2000W at 230v.

Johann Weck founded his company in 1900 to expound his principles of temperance and vegetarianism. His preserving system would enable housewives of the time to preserve a glut of fruits or vegetables without using alcohol. His company still runs on the principles he observed, promoting preserving as a fun, healthy and economical pastime. The jars are designed to be durable, practical and aesthetically pleasing. The Weck glass jar preserving method is suitable for jams, chutneys, jellies, pickles, curds and all kinds of preserves.
